DCF provides information regarding adoption. When a child has been removed from their home and it is not possible for a child to go back to the family, parental rights may be taken away by the court or voluntarily surrendered. Additionally, adoption assistance is a program designed to remove barriers to the adoption of children with special needs, who otherwise could not be adopted. The intent of the program is to assist the adoptive family in meeting the special and ordinary needs of a child. The types of assistance the child receives shall be determined by the negotiation process with Prevention and Protection staff.

When a family cannot remain safely together, Cornerstones of Care provides adoption services, recruiting new families in Kansas and Missouri. We have a special interest in serving children who have been in foster care the longest, including older adolescents, large sibling groups, and youth with special needs. Anyone wishing to adopt a child in state custody is required to complete requisite training. These free courses can take 4-9 weeks to complete.
