Legal Aid of Western Missouri has combined the Foreclosure Prevention program with the Low Income Tax Payer Clinic into the Consumer Protection Unit. Legal Aid’s Consumer Protection unit provides free civil legal counsel and representation for low-income people experiencing consumer and tax law matters that are negatively impacting their lives. The unit also answers questions over-the-phone for taxpayers of all income levels who have questions regarding tax filing. Attorneys assist clients in matters such as mortgage delinquency and default, delinquent tax sales, appealing real estate assessments, general consumer debt advice and defense, garnishments, and student loan defaults. Attorneys also represent taxpayers before the IRS and Missouri Department of Revenue.
